Living Under Grace and the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics
This is so cool! Monopoly sets were used to help Allies escape German POW camps in World War II!
Couldn’t do that with UNO cards!
Nice review. One thing though. I don’t think the EMS synth name-checked on the album is correct. Franke insists that TD’s first synth was an EMS Synthi-AKS (the briefcase design). TD then listed all their EMS synths on their covers as a VCS3….even though it was only Edgar who owned one much later (comparing this against every photo I have from the time and live clips of the band. By 1973 of course TD had:
Peter Baumann = 2 x AKS, Chris Franke = 1 x AKS (you can spot Chris’s synth as he had a small sticker of a Cherub stuck onto the front panel, top left), Edgar Froese = 1 x VCS3.
Personally I don’t buy the Stockhausen reference, his influence on TD’s music is minimal (Klaus Schulze says it drives him nuts when people think that he or TD were influenced by KarlHeinz)…I can only remember his name getting mentioned by the band a couple of times in their 42 year history. Spot on with Ligetti I think. Franke and Froese both met and studied under the avant garde composer Thomas Kessler, so I’d imagine that they were exposed to quite a bit of electro-acoustic and music concrete.
Thanks for the info, Andy, both about the synth line and the influences. I forgot about Kessler!
No problem (sorry about commenting on the wrong post…ouch!). I think Kessler is very important. Firstly for physically setting up the Berlin School of Electronic Music (partly funded by Chris Franke’s Mother)….& therefore kick starting not only, Franke, but also ‘the Agitation’ (later Agitation Free) which Franke was in obviously, and then drawing in Edgar (then playing with Al Akbar and Steve Jolliffe). I think it showed them all that music, didn’t have to be Vocals, Guitar, Bass and drums and a world of possibilities were out there. The only thing that held them back at that point was the technology. As soon as the first synthesizer came to Berlin they then saw which direction to go.
